My mother had been raving about this second hand store in Portsmouth, New Hampshire for months, so during my last visit home to New England, I checked it out. Now, Second Time Around, is not your typical second hand shopping experience. It is filled with perfectly arranged collections — ranging from linen items (by color) to denim to dresses (by color/material) to their selective upscale designer racks. I never would have thought I’d find a Burberry jacket and Bottega Veneta purse along the funky, hippified streets of Portsmouth, but indeed I did… and buy I did as well. Yikes. Despite the hit on my wallet, I am still dreaming of a return to this well-organized and carefully displayed second hand store. Your typical thrift store this is not! Buyer beware: you could spend many hours in this shop and will be likely to return.
The added bonus of my experience? I found a necklace my mother had put on consignment—a gaudy, yet hip, gold drapey thing from the 70s that was my grandmother’s—and made my mom make the shop return it to us, which they did, free of charge (so at least one of my many items purchased was free!).
Here’s the Portsmouth address, but the store is a chain (thank goodness) and is fairly well-located up and down the east coast of the U.S.
